Brixham Mission Centre

Some of the world's busiest sea-lanes are to be found in the English Channel and are full of hazard for smaller fishing vessels such as trawlers.   Fishing in Devon can be traced back to medieval times and the port of Brixham is still at the forefront of Britain's fishing industry.     Brixham Mission centre has been serving the maritime fishing and seafaring communities of Devon for many generations and is a recognised local landmark in the port.    Brixham Mission Centre provides a range of services helping fishermen and their families.    Fishermen (and seafarers) of all ages, able bodied, injured or shipwrecked and their families continue to find a warm welcome at our local centre.    In addition, the centre is used by many out of port vessels and by the wider community who feel equally welcome and at home.    The Superintendent continues this good work.      The Fishermen's Mission receives no government or lottery funding and depends solely on donations, to continue to provide it's invaluable services.

Money Raised for Mission - Jim's Marathon Run

Following successful completion of the Taunton Marathon on 11th April, SW fishing industry representative, Jim Portus today proudly presented a cheque for £3,187 to Superintendent John Anderson and Port Welfare Officer, Julia Pellow both based at the Brixham Fishermen’s Mission.

Thanks to local press coverage and online publicity, Jim raised in excess of £3,000 for the Mission from this, his 14th Marathon.

Since his first 10km run in Exmouth in 1990, Jim has now raised over £35,000 for the work of the Mission. His efforts were acknowledged by the presentation to him of the 2009 Stanley Pritchard Award at the Fishermen’s Mission Association AGM, held at Trinity House, London on 21st April. Jim is the Chairman of the Local Advisory Committee for the Mission in Brixham. When he is not busy representing the SW fishing industry for SWFPO Ltd on duties that take him often to Brussels and Westminster to deal with officials and fisheries administrators, he is helping John, Julia and a very enthusiastic group of volunteers, plus local chefs and businesses to plan this year’s major fundraising event, Fishstock Brixham 2010 Seafood and Music Festival. The event is to be held in the new fish market on Saturday 11th September.

Recently, Brixham Town Council, Torbay Council, English Riviera Tourist Board, Crown Estates and the Marine Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund all agreed to provide support and sponsorship for the one-day Festival that is shaping up to become a major feature in the late-summer tourism calendar for Brixham and Torbay.
