Brixham Fishermen's Mission

John Anderson.jpg

Following the great success of earlier Fishstock Brixham events, the organisers hope you are now on your way to experiencing one of your most memorable days in Devon ever! We endeavour to continue success by attracting the best of local and celebrity chefs, preparing and cooking best quality Brixham fish for you to sample and to purchase. Our food side of the event is supported musically by the best local musical talent and other performers from further afield who will entertain you all day long and well into the evening.    The Fishermen’s Mission, as a small self-funding maritime charity, has operated in Brixham supporting the Fishermen and their families since our first premises were established here in 1901. The present premises were established in 1983 and Fishstock Brixham 2013 is part of our celebrations of 3 decades of service.   We are delighted that all proceeds from this festival will be donated to help our ongoing work with fishermen and their families. Many improvements have been made in the fishing industry which is far safer now than ever, but accidents still happen! We were reminded of this by the very tragic loss of Exmouth Skipper, Geoff Ingram, fishing out of Brixham, whose boat Sarah Jayne foundered just a few days after Fishstock Brixham 2012. The Mission personnel are always there to lend a hand whatever the circumstances. We offer practical / spiritual / welfare / advice & guidance.   The Brixham Mission Superintendent, John Anderson is himself an ex-fisherman who knows the value of the ‘Missions’ work over the years (since being established in 1881) and has been actively involved with the Fishstock Brixham 2013 organising committee.    The committee hope you have a wonderful day and by your participation, you help raise funds to continue the valued work of the Fishermen’s Mission in this historic fishing community.     Enjoy your day and thank you for your support! Superintendent John W Anderson. Port Missioner. Brixham.

Brixham Mission Centre

Some of the world's busiest sea-lanes are to be found in the English Channel and are full of hazards for smaller fishing vessels such as trawlers.   Fishing in Devon can be traced back to medieval times and the port of Brixham is still at the forefront of Britain's fishing industry.     Brixham Mission Centre has been serving the maritime fishing and seafaring communities of Devon for many generations. However, sometimes change has to come to bring the services of the Mission more into line with the needs of a changing industry.   The Mission in Brixham is now looking forward to moving to new premises. Superintendent John Anderson and his wife Sheila will continue to live in Brixham and the new Mission Offices will be close to the harbour. John will continue to provide the highly effective response to the needs of fishermen and their families for which he is already well known. Working from its new offices, The Mission will be in a better position to provide a flexible, mobile, dedicated and effective 24-7 service, not just for Brixham fishermen but also those in the many other ports in Devon and Dorset for which the Brixham Mission has responsibility. The Mission is committed to providing such a service for as long as it is required. The Fishermen's Mission is determined to continue to provide the fullrange of services helping fishermen and their families.    Fishermen (and seafarers) of all ages, able bodied, injured or shipwrecked and their families will continue to find a warm welcome at our new local mini-Centre.    The new mini-Centre will be used by crews of many out of port vessels and by the wider fishing community who will be made equally welcome and at home.    The Superintendent continues this good work.      The Fishermen's Mission receives no government or lottery funding and depends solely on donations, to continue to provide it's invaluable services.

Stamp & Go Concert All Saints' Church 7th July 2012

“Stamp and Go” Celebration Concert - 7th July 2012, All Saints Church, Brixham. This Concert helped celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Fishermen’s Mission in Brixham. As part of the Festival of the Sea 2012 at All Saints Church, Brixham, the well known Cornish Sea Shanty Group “Stamp and Go” performed a concert on 7th July 2012. “Stamp and Go” really do GO from strength to strength and having put their STAMP on sea shanties they now have a huge following across the South West. Fishstock Brixham 2012 was delighted that “Stamp and Go” chose to donate this performance during the Festival of the Sea in aid of the Fishermen's Mission. They were supported by well-known local folk musicians, Maggie Duffy and Mike Weed. We are very pleased that this event raised £850 for the Fishermen’s Mission.
