FishLit is celebrating its second year at Fishstock Brixham. Last year our Meet the Authors event was a great success and FishLit2015 is going to be even better. This year we have members of Brixham Writers joining us as well as some new and exciting authors.
From Brixham we welcome Brenda MacKenzie and Ian Carr, both published with Endeavour Press, who will be talking to you about ‘How I became (digitally) published’ an event that will interest those who love their Kindle books.
Ian Carr is the author of 'Sons of Natal', a historical fiction novel set during the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879. He lived in South Africa and his interest in the 19th century and his experience of living in South Africa helped inspire the novel following the adventures of British Army officer, Edmund Wade. Ian, a member of Brixham Writers, is working on the second book in the Wade series.
Brenda MacKenzie is the author of ‘Into the Distance’ and ‘Beyond the Island. In addition to her novels, she writes travel articles which have been published in the Telegraph, Times Online and Motor Home Monthly. Brenda currently resides in Totnes, and is a member of Brixham Writers.
Tonia Parronchi author of ‘A Whisper on the Mediterranean’ will be talking about her sailing adventures with her husband Guido and their young son James.
When Tonia Parronchi’s husband, Guido, told her of his plans to buy a boat and take her and their baby sailing, she had her reservations, but she soon came round to the idea and has never looked back. Nor has their son, James, who despite his early seasickness has grown into a young man who truly loves sailing.
Travel with them through weather conditions that destroyed the myth of a gentle and forgiving Mediterranean, and such varied experiences as high seas, violent storms, stuck anchors, marauding mosquitoes, and severe sunburn. Visit idyllic, secluded bays and places of sublime beauty, unreachable unless by boat and completely untarnished by tourism.
The wonderful Lisa Ford and Emma-Jane Green will be entertaining young and old with the adventures of Drifter and Scully.
Drifter and Scully live by the sea. The happiest seagulls you ever did see. They live in a lighthouse that they think is fab and their best friend is a crab called Dab. They have a boat called the ‘Airy Nose’ and moor it in a little cove, going on trips around the bay, meeting with friends that want to play. Many adventures are in store, none of which have been told before. We want to share their tales with you and hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
Local chef Andy Sewell with not only be demonstrating his wonderful fish recipes at Fishstock Brixham, he will also be signing copies of his fantastic new book ‘Brixham; Recipes by Andy Sewell’. Andy the Head Chef at the Quayside Hotel says “My love of food and cooking started at an early age. My mother was a good cook and I always helped her out in the kitchen.” Andy’s approach to food is simple: always use the freshest produce possible from local suppliers.
The talented Dartmouth author, Steve Stevenson-Olds will be at FishLit for the first time with his novel The Water’s Edge and will be bringing us a taster of his new novel The Human Jigsaw.
The Water’s Edge is set in the heart of England -in 2005 and the preceding years - this is the story of Ritchie Angel, who, at thirty-five years of age, has achieved the unrealistic, and to many, the elusive perfect life. But Ritchie is starting to feel unwell, and as a result is regretfully informed that he has only days to live.
Keeping his new-found, unwanted secret to himself, Ritchie ensures his last precious moments are lived to the full. On the fateful night, collapsing at the Water's Edge on the old timber decking at his beautiful waterside home, his wife and daughter fast asleep upstairs, Ritchie dies alone.
Michelle Heatley will be signing copies of her novel Fish Soup which has had a fantastic year since the book was launched at FishLit2014.
In the magical and esoteric atmosphere of the Greek Islands, sisters Isa and Chloe fetch up on the shores of a very special haven, each searching for more than just the pungently fragrant recipe of a heady Mediterranean fish soup. They come for the weekend, bringing their baggage with them: both kinds. Celia, their mentor, helps the girls wend their way through not only learning to make the soup, but also through a cobweb of emotional healing. Unexpectedly she discovers that the compliment is returned.
The Three women are each entwined in their own Greek drama, with tragedy and comedy in equal measure, as they tread the paths to their own romantic understandings, fulfillment, and closure – with a bit of hectic adventure thrown in along the way.
FishLit2015 will be running throughout Saturday 5 September at Fishstock Brixham. More authors are to be announced. There will also be an Author trail where some of the books featured can be downloaded for a special festival price of 99p.
